FAQ

What is Yoga?

Yoga is over 5,000 years old and is a scientific system that was developed in India. The Sanskrit word “yoga” is “to yoke” or create union between our mind, body and spirit. Most yoga schools in the west focus on the physical and/or fitness aspects of yoga and while that is one of the benefits of practicing yoga, we welcome you to appreciate the versatility of yoga and explore and study the spiritual elements of the practice as well. At Powers of One most of our classes focus on the physical aspects of breathing and moving through the asanas, but our instructors will integrate many of the wonderful teachings of yoga into each class.

Keep in mind that yoga is not a religion; it is a spiritual practice that can be, and has been, a part of many religions throughout history, but is not in and of itself a religion.

I’m a beginner, how do I get started?

No pre-registration is required for any regularly scheduled classes. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before class starts to meet with one of our instructors to complete a brief tour of the studio and registration paperwork.

Yoga is for everyone regardless of shape, age, or experience. However, please inform the instructor if you have any known injuries or health issues, including pregnancy. This information is kept confidential.

It is recommended that you practice on an empty stomach. Water is fine during class, but no food or other beverages should be consumed immediately before or during class. Please do not chew gum during class.

The benefits of yoga are amazing and the results will astound you. Consistency in attending classes will help you realize these benefits.

What do I wear?

Please wear comfortable exercise clothing that you can easily move around in during class. Bare feet are recommended for practice. For those coming to the studio from work, we have full locker rooms available for you to change into your yoga clothes.

Do I need to bring anything?

An open mind and heart! We have mats and props available for you to use, however we do ask that you sanitize the mats with the wipes we have available in the studio.

What do I need to know about yoga etiquette?

Please turn off your cell phone before entering the studio. If you need to keep your phone with you during class, please make sure it’s on vibrate or airplane mode.

We provide a space for you to store your items such as shoes, purse, etc. right outside of the studio space. Please remove your shoes before entering the studio space. We encourage you to enter the studio and leave your “baggage” behind.

We understand that there are times when you may be late or have a need to leave class early. Please enter and exit the studio quietly.

Mindfulness is a key teaching in yoga. While we encourage you to challenge yourself, respect your body and don’t push beyond your limits. If you feel overwhelmed, rest in child’s pose, come out of a posture early, or ask the instructor for a modification. Listen to your body….wise yogi’s always know when to rest.
